Overview

Overview

There are no major wholesalers in the market, and none with manufacturing or production capabilities. The businesses listed below are wholesale/retail and while they provide a reasonably wide range of products they stock only to the requirements of the relatively small local market. They do not carry large stocks that would enable them to cater to surge demand.

Food Security: 

In response to COVID-19, the Government of Tuvalu has implemented the following measures to ensure the availability of food in country: 

i) COVID-19 Food-Security Subcommittee

Led by the Ministry of Finance, stock-takes of staple food items (rice, sugar, milk, flour & biscuit) are carried out on a fortnightly basis to ensure that there is enough staple food for everyone in the country. The Ministry (through the Department of Business and the Central Statistics Department) has formulated a rate of consumption for these staple food items. If staple food stocks are low, and the cargo vessel is delayed, the Ministry will in turn collaborate with staple food importers to discourage consumers from bulk-buying.
