Overview
The above map illustrates the supply chain of commodities into the country through customs at the location of regional market hubs. Food follows the same supply chain. The upstream supply of food commodities goes from farmers, collectors, wholesalers/millers, retailers to final consumers, including a flow of goods within the country from main wholesale markets (e.g., Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, Bhairahawa, Narayanghat, Birgunj, Biratnagar and Damak etc.) in the Terai belt to markets in the hill and mountain districts. The Terai belt is the countries’ main cereal production area.
Despite being an agricultural country, Nepal imports a large number of agricultural commodities as processed and packaged food from other countries to fulfil the need of its people. (Source: Review on Nepal’s Increasing Agricultural Import)
Because of a trade imbalance in food commodities as well as an overall trade deficit, cost of food in Nepal is expected to rise. The trend in food prices can be observed at: Nepal Food Inflation. Increased food cost, poor market access and lack of land ownership have led to food deficit areas in the mid-West and far-West of Nepal.

Retail Sector
Global retailer brands are not present in Nepal. Most of the retailers are local and the largest retailers in the market often have ties with Indian retailers and wholesalers. Since the manufacturing sector is not well developed in the country, retail business is thriving. This has led to a trade deficit, as well as a decrease in output of the agricultural sector.
